The Pottery offers large group pottery workshops for social service agencies that aim to excite and inspire participants. These workshops can be tailored to many different organizations such as healthcare, shelters, adult learning centres, community service organizations and more.

Social service workshops are either paid for by the social service agency or through arts grants and are provided for the clients of social service agencies across Toronto. However, social service agency staff are welcome to book a workshop for themselves. Please see the team building tab of this website.

The idea behind this type of workshop is that the participants determine what the project will look like. They decide the theme and choose the final product. The Pottery will supply the materials, tools, instruction, and encouragement. The goal is for the participants to work together to produce a permanent instillation of their devising. For example, groups have made a clay quilt, a collection of masks, and a multi-part sculpture. This workshop can be a one time event, or a series of workshops. See examples below.

The basic workshop involves a brief discussion of the themes being explored. This is followed by a discussion of technical considerations for the project, as well as participant concept sketches. Participants will then be encouraged to share the concepts represented in their sketches with the group in an effort to refine their ideas. A demonstration on working with clay will follow.

At this point, the participants will produce their pieces with help from our instructor. When completed, the pieces will be brought to The Pottery to be fired (hardened) before being returned to the host organization within three weeks. The basic workshop lasts four hours.

Please note that any workshop involving sensitive topics will require staff from the host organization to be present at all times. This may include art therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, or others.

In order to deepen understanding and increase the scope of artistic exploration, The Pottery offers four-session workshops. These can include:

  • A writing exercise outlining each participant's rationale for their piece (e.g., what it portrays and why).

  • Opportunities for participants to offer feedback to each other.

  • A photo record of the pieces, the participants, and the process.

  • A journal containing a photo of each participant and their piece, their preliminary sketch and/or their explanatory writing.

  • A culminating party / exhibition with handmade invitations.
