GUILD WORKSHOPS

Guild Workshops can be tailored to the interests of guild members. Workshops can range from one session of 90 minutes to two full days. Ninety-minute sessions will cover one topic, longer sessions can cover multiple topics. The following topics can be used as a guide to help you design the workshop you want. Workshops can be delivered in a demonstration and/or participation style. Please contact paul@thepottery.ca for pricing information or to book a guild workshop.

Clay
WORKSHOP TOPIC 1 THROWING SECTIONAL POTS

Whether you want to make larger pots or simply add a distinctive flare to smaller pieces, joining multiple pieces can open up a whole new direction for your work. Some skills that will be covered are:

  • Using combined sections to create taller, larger pieces

  • Applying pedestal bases to bowls, teapots or tureens

  • Centering large amounts of clay​

Teapot
WORKSHOP TOPIC 2 TEAPOTS: SIMPLE, SECTIONAL, FUN or FUNKY

Want to throw teapots that pour without dripping? Now you can. In this workshop, we will explore teapot engineering and function. Some skills that will be covered are:

 

  • Cutting, and assembling component parts

  • Making handles and spouts

  • Throwing and altering body shape

WORKSHOP TOPIC 3 UP UP and AWAY

Do you want to speed up your work while maintaining quality? Some skills that will be covered are:

  • Throwing to a pointer

  • Throwing off the hump

  • Creating a programme to increase throwing speed

WORKSHOP TOPIC 4 LARGE and LIDDED

Casseroles, Tureens, Cookie Jars and more

Choosing a lid type and fitting it properly, especially on larger pieces, can seem overwhelming but it doesn't need to be. Some skills that will be covered are:

 

  • Throwing a variety of lids

  • Fitting lids of all kinds including domed, gallery seat and irregular

  • Creating handles including pulled, knob, textured, extruded and sprigged
