CLAY IN THE CLASSROOM- Workshops For Teachers
These Ontario Arts Council funded workshops (free for participating schools) would develop teacher's skills and confidence so that they could conduct clay workshops in their classrooms. At the workshop, teachers would be guided through the creation of a clay project. This workshop would deal with technical issues related to creating projects with clay. For those schools having kilns, loading and firing could be dealt with at this workshop or could be covered in a separate short workshop. The goal of the workshop(s) would be to instill teacher's confidence in order to take this knowledge back into their classrooms and conduct their own clay based lessons. In this workshop we would briefly discuss curriculum extensions that would allow teachers to tie the clay component into a broader unit of study. Participants will keep their clay project and will be given support documents. These include: Clay workshops how to guide, grade specific clay workshops list with curriculum expectations met by these classroom projects, a sample of an integrated lesson plan with curriculum expectations met and a kiln loading and firing guide. If individual teachers feel unprepared to conduct their first workshop on their own, I would visit during the workshop to offer advice or act as a resource person. As an additional support, a blog has been created, allowing teachers to access the technical and curriculum information presented at the initial workshop. It will also allow teachers to dialog with me and each other about their experiences. It will enable teachers to ask each other questions and to offer suggestions for further developing the curriculum integration. The blog is located at clayworkshop.wordpress.com
COST: Being fully funded by The Ontario Arts Council The only cost to a school is a $5.00 materials fee per participant.
